June 19, 2025 — Calhoun, GA
Today marks the federal holiday of Juneteenth, with government offices and many local businesses closed in observance of the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Amid the holiday, the Calhoun Animal Shelter has issued an urgent plea to the community. The facility is currently at full capacity and facing the heartbreaking possibility of having to euthanize animals if adoptions do not increase immediately.
To encourage adoptions and save lives, the shelter is waiving all fees. Adoptions now include spay/neuter services and a rabies vaccination at no cost. Shelter staff are urging residents to consider adopting a pet during this critical time.
In local government news, the Gordon County Board of Commissioners’ Quality of Life Committee will meet today at 11:00 a.m. at the County Administration Building. The meeting, open to the public, will include updates from Parks and Recreation as well as the Senior Center.
