Gordon County News Roundup: Heat Advisory, Special Election, Tax Appeal Deadline, and Arrest Following GBI Threat

Gordon County residents are urged to prepare for extreme heat, stay informed about upcoming elections, and take note of important local deadlines as authorities also report a recent arrest involving threats to law enforcement.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for Gordon County and much of north and central Georgia from 1 p.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with forecasters warning that the heat index could reach up to 107 degrees. High humidity and soaring temperatures are expected to create dangerous conditions, especially for those without access to air conditioning or who spend time outdoors. Health officials advise residents to stay indoors, stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity, and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and pets.

In local government updates, a special Democratic Party runoff election for the Public Service Commission (PSC) is scheduled for Monday, July 15. On election day, only the Calhoun Recreation Center will be open as a polling location.

Additionally, residents wishing to file tax valuation appeals must do so by August 1, marking the deadline for submitting any property tax assessment challenges.

In law enforcement news, a Calhoun man is in custody after allegedly threatening to shoot agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Authorities say 36-year-old Casey Herron made the threat during a phone call Sunday to the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency. The agency promptly alerted the GBI, Gordon County 911, and Calhoun Police. Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Herron’s Jolly Road NW residence on Monday evening. He was arrested without incident and booked into the Gordon County Jail, facing a charge of terroristic threats and acts. The investigation remains ongoing.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions amid the ongoing heat and upcoming civic deadlines.
