The Georgia Department of Education has introduced a Student Bill of Rights, a new guiding document that outlines the essential rights of all K–12 students in the state’s public schools.
Launched ahead of the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026, the initiative aims to celebrate the nation’s founding principles while refocusing on the foundational goal of public education: serving students. The document also serves as a framework for the Department’s future strategic plan and legislative priorities.
The Student Bill of Rights affirms 12 core entitlements for Georgia students, including the right to a high-quality education, safe and supportive learning environments, smaller class sizes, and access to certified and well-compensated educators. It also emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning, reduced screen time, access to nutritious Georgia-grown meals, and preparation for life beyond graduation.
The document promotes student-centered opportunities across a wide range of programs, from career and technical education to fine arts, world languages, STEM, and advanced coursework. It also prioritizes the development of academic and real-world skills, financial literacy, and pathways to college, careers, military service, or entrepreneurship.
The Student Bill of Rights reflects the Department’s broader vision to modernize public education and ensure every student in Georgia is equipped for a successful future.
