Gordon County residents are being warned to stay alert after multiple reports of a phone scam involving callers impersonating deputy sheriffs.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), several individuals have received calls from scammers claiming to be deputies. The callers demand payment for fake fines or missed jury duty and threaten victims with arrest or “bench warrants” if they do not comply.

Officials say the scam is designed to trick people into sending money—often electronically—to fraudulent accounts. Investigators believe the calls are likely originating from overseas.

“The Sheriff’s Office never collects fines over the phone,” a GCSO spokesperson stated. “If there is legitimate court-related business, it will always be handled in person by a uniformed deputy in a marked patrol car.”

Authorities are urging anyone who receives a suspicious call to hang up immediately and to never provide personal or financial information over the phone.
