BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS SPLIT VOTES ON TWO POULTRY OPERATION REQUESTS IN RANGER

UPDATE (9:10 PM): BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HAVE DENIED A 2ND POTENTIAL POULTRY OPERATION IN RANGER. The public hearing for the second request for a poultry operation in Ranger…this one on Taylor Town Road…has just ended, and that request was DENIED by the Board in a vote of 3-2.
Commissioner Chad Steward brought the motion to DENY the request, with Commissioner Kevin Cunningham bringing the 2nd to DENY. Commissioner Bud Owens voted for the DENIAL, with Commissioners Randy Abernathy and Kurt Sutherland voting against denying the request.
ORIGINAL – BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS APPROVE A REQUEST FOR MORE CHICKEN HOUSES IN RANGER IN 3-2 VOTE: The Gordon County Board of Commissioners have just voted 3-2 in favor of a large dry litter poultry operation on Hightower Loop in Ranger. The proposed operation will consist of eight total 55′ x 600′ chicken houses on 279 acres on Hightower Loop Road in the Ranger community. Dozens of residents in the area showed up in protest of the commercial operation, expressing concerns during the public hearing on reduction in property values, road and infrastructure concerns, environmental concerns and smell.
Commissioners Bud Owens and Chad Steward voted against the request, with Commissioners Kevin Cunningham, Randy Abernathy and Kurt Sutherland voting in favor of the operation.
There is one more poultry operation public hearing for another request in Ranger beginning at this time. Check back for updates.
