The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education has announced a vacancy in Board Post 4 following a recent administrative promotion within the district.
Shelly Hood has been promoted to assistant principal at Calhoun Primary School, a move the district says it celebrates as a professional advancement in leadership. However, her promotion creates a conflict of interest under state law for her brother-in-law, Jeffrey M. Hood, who was recently selected to fill the vacant Post 4 seat on the Board of Education.
According to Georgia Code § 20-2-51, individuals are ineligible to serve on a local board of education if an immediate family member is employed as a superintendent, principal, assistant principal, or system administrative staff member within the same district.
To remain in full compliance with state law, the board confirmed that Jeffrey M. Hood will not be eligible to fill the Post 4 position.
Board Chair Becky Gilbert George expressed appreciation for Mr. Hood’s willingness to serve while also congratulating Shelly Hood on her new role.
“The Board of Education expresses its gratitude to Mr. Hood for his willingness to serve and wishes to congratulate Mrs. Hood on her new leadership role within the district,” George said. “We plan to reevaluate the process for filling the Post 4 vacancy at the January Board of Education work session.”
Further details regarding the process to fill the vacancy are expected to be discussed at that time.
