Calhoun High School and Gordon Central High School wrestling teams each posted notable performances in recent postseason competition, highlighted by a State Duals qualification and a historic team finish.
Calhoun High School Wrestling finished as the Region 7 AAA runner-up, earning a spot in the upcoming State Duals competition. The strong showing places the Yellow Jackets among the top teams in the region and advances them to the state-level dual tournament.
Meanwhile, the Gordon Central High School Wrestling Warriors turned in their best Area Duals performance in more than a decade at the Area 1A-7 Duals held at Chattooga High School. Gordon Central went 3-1 on the day and placed third out of 12 teams, improving the team’s dual match record to 25-2 for the season.
The Warriors opened the tournament with a dominant 54-12 victory over Pepperell, including six points earned by forfeit. Gordon Central then faced returning Area Dual Champions Gordon Lee in a highly competitive semifinal, falling 59-21.
Regrouping in consolation action, the Warriors controlled their matchup against Model with a 52-27 win before closing the tournament with a 46-27 victory over Dade County in the consolation finals to secure third place. The finish marks Gordon Central’s best placement at the area dual tournament in at least 12 years.
Several wrestlers posted strong individual records during the event, including Colton Banks (4-0), Mathew Lara (3-0), Vance Siburkis (3-1), Wildon Garcia (3-1), Adan Lara (3-1), Andon Bailey (3-1), and Brayden Timms (3-1).
The Warriors will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Rome High School, with wrestling scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
