The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of North Georgia, effective Saturday, Jan. 24, through early Monday, Jan. 26, as forecasters continue to monitor the potential for wintry weather across the region.
According to the NWS, the watch was issued based on the earliest anticipated onset of wintry precipitation. Meteorologists caution that the watch area could expand farther south in the coming days as forecast confidence improves.
Forecasters say the system remains several days away, and changes in weather model guidance are expected. One key uncertainty involves the behavior of cold air moving into the region. Long-range forecast models often struggle to accurately depict the strength and reach of cold air wedges in the Southeast, making it difficult to determine how far south snow, sleet, or freezing rain may develop.
Despite the uncertainty, officials stress that residents should not let their guard down.
“Now is the time to continue making preparations,” the National Weather Service advised, particularly for those currently included in the watch area.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official NWS updates and local emergency management agencies as the forecast evolves. Additional watches, warnings, or advisories may be issued as confidence in the timing and impacts of the storm increases.
