One of Gordon County’s most anticipated annual events is just around the corner as the Battle of Resaca Reenactment returns for its 162nd anniversary weekend on May 16 and 17, 2026.
Held on the historic Chitwood Farm just north of Resaca off Highway 41, the event is recognized as Georgia’s oldest and largest Civil War reenactment. Each year, it draws history enthusiasts, families, and visitors from across the region to experience a living snapshot of the past.
Hosted by the Georgia Division Reenactors Association, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, the weekend offers a wide range of activities designed to immerse attendees in Civil War-era life.
The event site opens to the public at 9:00 a.m. both days, allowing guests to explore authentic camps and interact with reenactors portraying soldiers and civilians of the era. A Confederate cemetery memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, while Sunday features a period church service at the Social Fly.
The highlight of the weekend comes at 2:00 p.m. each day with full-scale battle reenactments, offering spectators a dramatic and educational look at one of the Civil War’s notable engagements. Camps will be closed to visitors during the battle for safety.
In addition to the battles, attendees can enjoy camp tours, living history demonstrations, cavalry competitions, and period medical presentations. The event also features period music, a Saturday night dance for reenactors, and a variety of vendors offering food, beverages, and historically inspired goods along “sutler row.”
Organizers note the event will be held rain or shine, though battle times may be delayed in the event of lightning.
The Battle of Resaca Reenactment continues to serve as a major cultural and educational event in Northwest Georgia, preserving history while offering a unique, hands-on experience for all ages.
