Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 420,000 vehicles in the United States due to a seat belt issue that could increase the risk of injury in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects certain Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models from the 2018 through 2022 model years.
According to NHTSA, the problem involves front seat belt retractors that may lock unintentionally, preventing the seat belt from extending or retracting properly. Officials say a seat belt that cannot function as intended may fail to properly protect occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. In some cases, the seat belt may also retract too quickly, potentially causing injury.
The latest recall expands upon two previous recalls involving the same issue. Ford has reported two warranty claims and two field reports related to the defect. The automaker is also aware of one injury associated with the problem.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters by mail with instructions on how to proceed. Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect both front seat belt retractors and replace any affected components at no cost to vehicle owners.
Anyone seeking additional information about the recall can contact Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to schedule an inspection as soon as they receive their recall notice to ensure their seat belts are functioning properly.
