- Terrance Lee McCue, 47, of Kennesaw, was arrested by the Calhoun Police Department and charged with Possession of Less Than One Ounce of Marijuana, Possession of Drug-Related Objects, and Possession of Methamphetamine.
Two Back-to-School Giveaways Planned for Saturday
Families in the Calhoun-Gordon County area will have two opportunities this Saturday, July 25, to receive free school supplies before the new school year begins.
The Christian Community Outreach (CCO Ministry) Annual Back-to-School Outreach will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Black and Yellow Park at the Calhoun Recreation Department. The event will offer free backpacks, school supplies, clothing, shoes, food, bottled water, games, and family activities. More information is available by calling or texting 678-767-0071.
Later in the day, Samantha Lusk & Associates Realty will host its Annual Backpack and School Supply Drive and Giveaway from 2 until 3:30 p.m. at 208 North River Street in Calhoun, with parking available at the VFW. Families can receive free backpacks, school supplies, popcorn, and snow cones while supplies last. The event follows a “bring supplies if you can, take supplies if you need” model.
Summer Feeding Program Wrapping Up
Calhoun’s summer feeding program is coming to a close, with tomorrow marking the final meal delivery of the season.
To help bridge the gap before students return to school, seven-day meal boxes will be available for pickup on Thursday.
When school resumes, breakfast and lunch will once again be provided free of charge to every student in both the Calhoun City and Gordon County school systems. Officials estimate the program saves the average family approximately $1,200 each year while ensuring students have access to nutritious meals.
Lettuce Recall Affects Georgia
A voluntary recall has been issued by Taylor Farms de Mexico involving shredded iceberg lettuce and salad products distributed in 27 states, including Georgia.
The recall affects products shipped between June 29 and July 16 with best-by dates through August 3. Included are Marketside-brand shredded lettuce and salad products sold at select Walmart stores, as well as bulk products distributed to restaurants, hospitals, and food service providers.
The recall is linked to a multistate Cyclospora outbreak that has sickened more than 1,600 people. Federal investigators say tracing the source has been complicated by delayed implementation of the FDA’s Food Traceability Rule, which has been postponed until July 2028.
Gordon County Gas Prices Continue to Rise
Gas prices continue climbing across Northwest Georgia as renewed conflict involving Iran and concerns over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz push crude oil prices higher.
The average price of regular gasoline in Gordon County now stands at $3.74 per gallon, while the national average is approaching $4.00.

Gordon County Commissioners Meet Tonight
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners meets tonight at the Gordon County Judicial Building Assembly Room, 101 South Piedmont Street.
A work session begins at 5 p.m. with an Information Technology Department report, followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m.
The agenda includes several zoning requests throughout the county, including conditional use permits for poultry houses, multiple residential rezoning requests, manufactured housing proposals, and a request to rezone property on Tate Bend Road for highway commercial use.
Commissioners will also consider:
- Declaring surplus equipment for the Sheriff’s Office.
- A $1,265 annual agreement for E-911 virtual training software.
- An $18,295 renewal with Schneider Geospatial for the county’s qPublic mapping portal.
- A Public Works engineering task order for Soda Creek not to exceed $37,500.
- Adoption of a formal County Credit Card Policy.
- A $58,500 contract with Evergreen Solutions to conduct a countywide wage and compensation study, which would require a FY2027 budget amendment.
