The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education has voted unanimously to name the Calhoun High School track in honor of legendary coach and educator R. Lynn Walter, recognizing a lifetime of service that has shaped generations of student-athletes.
The decision was made during the board’s Aug. 10 work session and honors a career that has spanned more than six decades at Calhoun High School.
Walter served as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach for 30 years and has continued supporting the school’s track and cross-country programs through more than three decades of volunteer service. During that time, he became one of the most accomplished coaches in school history, helping build a tradition of excellence that continues today.
Among his many honors, Walter was named Georgia Cross Country Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Calhoun-Gordon County Sports Hall of Fame. He also holds a unique place in Calhoun athletics as the only coach in school history to produce state champions in three different sports: track and field, cross country, and tennis.
His teams won 16 region championships during his coaching career, including an impressive streak of 10 consecutive region titles.
While his competitive success is well documented, school officials say Walter’s greatest achievement has been the impact he has had on the lives of countless students through his commitment to athletics, leadership, discipline, and character. His influence has extended far beyond the playing field, mentoring generations of young people both as a coach and educator.
Calhoun City Schools congratulated Walter on what it described as a remarkable career and thanked him for his lasting contributions to the school’s athletic programs and the broader community.
A formal dedication ceremony is planned for Friday, Oct. 2, during the pregame festivities of Calhoun High School’s Homecoming football game at Phil Reeve Stadium. Coach Walter will also be recognized during the upcoming track season, when permanent signage honoring his legacy will be unveiled at the track.
With the naming of the facility, Calhoun City Schools is ensuring that Coach Walter’s legacy of excellence, leadership, and service will continue to inspire future generations of Yellow Jacket student-athletes for years to come.
