[SCHOOL NEWS: CALHOUN CITY SCHOOLS] Calhoun City Schools is celebrating strong growth in mathematics following the release of the 2025–2026 Georgia Milestones results. Districtwide, student performance in math increased by 3% in both the “Proficient & Above” and “Developing & Above” categories, showing overall year-over-year gains in six of the seven tested grade levels and courses. Calhoun students met or beat the state average in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 8th-grade math, as well as Algebra I. Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor credited the hard work of students, teachers, staff, and families for driving the district’s continued progress.

[ECONOMIC, GAS & MARKET NEWS] Turning to economic news, drivers are seeing continued pressure at the pump. The primary force driving higher fuel costs is the ongoing war in Iran, which continues to disrupt global crude oil supply chains. Local gas prices in Gordon County are hovering around $3.68 per gallon, though cash discounts in the area can still be found as low as $3.39. Analysts warn that conflict-driven energy costs will likely keep prices volatile.
Compounding those cost-of-living concerns, the national economic picture showed unexpected weakness. The latest labor report revealed the economy lost 23,000 jobs, alongside heavy downward revisions to previous reports that wiped out 103,000 jobs initially reported for May and June.
Adding to global financial concerns, the CAPE ratio—or Shiller P/E metric—has surged past 41, touching historic highs. The CAPE ratio measures current stock market prices against average company earnings over the past 10 years, adjusted for inflation, to evaluate whether the market is overvalued. Historically, the long-term average for the CAPE ratio sits right around 17. When it climbs this far above normal levels, a major market correction typically follows. The only previous times the ratio hovered in this 40-plus territory were right before the 1929 Great Crash and the 1999 dot-com bubble burst, signaling heightened risk for investors today.
