Gordon County’s unemployment rate stood at 3% in July as unemployment rates declined across Northwest Georgia and every regional commission in the state, according to figures released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.
Gordon County reported a labor force of 29,454 people in July, with 28,584 employed. The county had 870 people classified as unemployed, resulting in an unemployment rate of 3%.
The county’s rate was slightly below the overall Northwest Georgia unemployment rate, which fell three-tenths of a percentage point over the month to 3.1%. The regional rate was 3.8% one year ago.
Northwest Georgia’s labor force totaled 459,530 in July, a decrease of 1,274 from the previous month. However, the region’s labor force increased by 7,400 compared with the same period last year.
The number of employed residents across Northwest Georgia increased by 164 over the month and by 10,492 over the year, reaching 445,273.
Initial unemployment claims in the region totaled 1,956, an increase of 148 from the previous month. Claims were down substantially compared with a year ago, falling by 2,196.
The Georgia Department of Labor said Thursday that unemployment rates fell across all of Georgia’s regional commissions in July.
“July brought a clear victory for Georgia: Unemployment fell in every single metro area and region,” Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes said. “When state leaders, local communities and Main Street businesses row in the same direction, results follow.”
Holmes said the department remains focused on putting Georgians to work, increasing paychecks and creating economic opportunities throughout the state.
