Highway 41 has reopened between East Line and Red Bud Road following infrastructure repairs completed by the City of Calhoun.

Gov. Brian Kemp’s 30-day suspension of Georgia’s motor fuel tax is now in effect, running through October 29 to combat high gas prices, which are currently averaging between $4.10 and $4.15 per gallon locally. The executive order also suspends state weight limits on commercial vehicles to lower transportation costs. While this aims to help manufacturing budgets hit by fuel volatility, immediate relief at the pump is unlikely because fuel currently sitting in station holding tanks has already had the tax paid. This month-long suspension guarantees a substantial loss of state tax revenue, and lifting commercial weight limits introduces potential problems like accelerated road wear and increased safety risks from heavier trucks requiring longer stopping distances. Furthermore, critics of the governor’s decision argue the tax suspension is a political stunt timed for the upcoming midterm elections.
Significant federal changes to SNAP benefits take effect today, October 1, bringing both cost-of-living increases and stricter eligibility hurdles. Driven by annual adjustments and the newly enacted federal “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the maximum monthly SNAP allotment increases to $306 for an individual and $1,023 for a family of four. However, the new law also shifts a massive financial burden to state governments, requiring Georgia to now cover 75% of administrative costs. More critically for residents, the law expands mandatory work requirements to adults aged 18 to 64 and removes previous exemptions for veterans, those experiencing homelessness, and former foster youth. Only households with members over 60 or those with disabilities are still permitted to use the Standard Utility Allowance without documenting actual utility expenses.
On the national economic front, Federal Reserve interest rate expectations remain a focal point as officials work to curb inflation. For middle-class families, the impact of these monetary policies is twofold. While higher interest rates are necessary to tame the inflation that has driven up the cost of everyday groceries and utilities, they also significantly increase the cost of borrowing. This leaves households facing higher credit card annual percentage rates, steeper auto loans, and expensive mortgages, forcing many to delay major purchases or tighten their budgets as the economy adjusts.
The Gordon County Planning Commission will meet on October 12 to review a series of zoning requests. The agenda features applications from Jose “Tony” Trejo for multiple lots on Azalea Street, seeking a 40-foot front building setback variance and a rezoning of six parcels from A-1 to R-1. The commission will also hear a request from Tracy Bartley to rezone a 1.0-acre lot on Boone Ford Road SE from A-1 to residential, and an application from Kimberly Bethke to rezone 2.89 acres on Foxhound Trail NE in Ranger from A-1 to RA-1. The Board of Commissioners will make final decisions on these requests at their October 20 meeting.
In education news, Calhoun High School achieved an outstanding 98.8% four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2026. Calhoun City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor praised the achievement, crediting the determination of students and the dedicated support of teachers, families, and the community in preparing graduates for college and career success.
In wildlife news, the USDA will airdrop approximately 648,000 oral rabies vaccine baits across North Georgia during October, including designated areas in Gordon County. The distribution targets raccoons and other wildlife to curb the spread of the virus, and residents and pet owners are advised to avoid handling or disturbing the vaccine packets if found on the ground.
