CALHOUN, GA – The Gordon County Board of Commissioners voted this week to advertise the county’s 2025 millage rate at 9.042 mills, the same as last year. By law, the board cannot set a final tax rate higher than the amount advertised.
Finance Director Andrea Bramblett reported that a rate of 9.2 mills would be needed to balance the county’s already tight budget.
Commissioner Chad Stewart, who introduced the motion, said his decision was made with the county’s 11,000 homeowners who receive a Homestead Exemption in mind. “This is for them,” Stewart said.
The motion to advertise the rate passed 4–1, with Stewart joined by Chairman Buddy Owens, Vice Chairman M.R. Cunningham, and Commissioner Kevin Sutherland. Commissioner Randy Abernathy cast the lone dissenting vote, cautioning that holding the rate at 9.042 could “create a fiscal hole” in county finances.
The board will move forward with the legally required public notice and hearing process before adopting the final millage rate later this year.
