As Georgia students head back to class, AAA is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert near schools and bus stops as part of its annual “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign. The initiative, launched nationally in 1946, aims to reduce dangerous driving behavior in school zones and neighborhoods and help prevent child pedestrian accidents.
According to a recent AAA Consumer Pulse Survey, 69% of Georgia drivers report regularly driving through school zones or near bus stops during the fall. With that in mind, AAA is reminding motorists to use extra caution, particularly during morning and afternoon school commute times.
In partnership with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, local law enforcement agencies, school districts, and other traffic safety partners, AAA–The Auto Club Group is hosting five safety events across the state between now and August 1 to promote the campaign and reinforce safe driving habits.
Drivers are encouraged to:
Reduce speeds in school zones and residential areas
Avoid distractions behind the wheel
Obey crossing guards and school bus stop arms
Watch closely for children walking or biking to school
The campaign serves as an annual reminder that traffic safety is essential to a safe and successful school year—for drivers and students alike.
