AAA Warns Drivers to Secure Christmas Trees Safely This Holiday Season

As families begin picking out freshly cut Christmas trees, AAA is reminding drivers to take extra precautions when transporting them home. The organization warns that an improperly secured tree can damage a vehicle and create serious hazards for others on the road.

AAA spokeswoman Montrae Waiters says drivers should treat Christmas tree transport as seriously as any other type of cargo. Bringing the right equipment and taking a few extra minutes to secure the tree properly can prevent accidents and protect both the vehicle and other motorists.

Previous AAA research shows that nearly one in five Christmas tree buyers has experienced a tree falling off or out of a vehicle during transport. Loose trees can scratch paint, damage door seals or window frames, and even fly off, creating dangerous debris. Road debris contributes to an estimated 200,000 crashes every year, leading to about 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The organization notes that vehicle repair costs from improper transport can add up quickly. Surface scratches may cost up to $150, replacing door seals can run as high as $550, and repainting a severely scratched roof may reach $1,500.

AAA offers several tips to ensure safe transport:
Plan ahead by bringing strong rope or ratchet straps, an old blanket, and gloves.
Wrap the tree in netting to reduce wind resistance.
Protect the vehicle by placing a blanket on the roof before loading the tree.
Load trunk-first to minimize wind damage.
Secure the tree at the top, middle, and bottom with sturdy straps.
Double-check stability before driving to ensure the tree will not shift or fall.

AAA says these steps can help ensure the holiday season gets off to a safe and problem-free start.
