Bartow County Animal Control Facing Capacity Crisis, Euthanizations Possible

August 6, 2025 – Bartow County, GA — The Bartow County Animal Control Facility is in the midst of a critical overcrowding crisis, according to a statement issued Tuesday by County Commissioner Steve Taylor. The facility, which has been operating at or above capacity for the past two years, is now being forced to make difficult decisions, including the potential euthanization of some animals.

“Turning animals away has always been our last option,” said Commissioner Taylor. “However, due to this unfortunate overcrowding situation, there have been times that we have been unable to take in animals.”

Efforts to transfer animals to neighboring shelters and rescue organizations have proven unsuccessful, as those facilities are also experiencing similar strains. The inability to accept or relocate animals has created a domino effect, increasing the risks of animal sickness, injury, and broader public safety concerns.

Officials warn that overcrowded shelters can lead to heightened stress among animals, increased disease transmission, and diminished capacity to isolate or treat sick or injured pets.

As a result, Bartow County Animal Control has begun evaluating “at-risk” animals—those that are sick, injured, have behavioral issues, or pose a safety threat—for potential euthanization once their required three-day hold period expires.

“This situation is incredibly difficult for the entire staff at Animal Control, and they are doing everything they can to avoid this difficult decision,” Taylor emphasized.

Despite these challenges, the shelter has historically maintained a 90% live release rate over the past six years. While this year’s rate has dropped to 85%, Taylor expressed confidence in the team’s continued efforts to restore that number by the end of the year.

The commissioner praised Animal Control Director Reggie Nation and his staff for their dedication: “I want to thank Director Reggie Nation and the staff of Bartow County Animal Control for the remarkable work they do each day to serve the citizens of Bartow County.”

Citizens are encouraged to consider adoption, fostering, or donating to local rescue efforts to help ease the burden on the shelter.
