GORDON COUNTY, Ga. — A brush fire response in Gordon County on Thursday afternoon led to the discovery of a deceased individual and an active multi-agency investigation.
According to Gordon County Fire Rescue, crews were dispatched around 1:56 p.m. on April 2 to the 7000 block of Nicklesville Road following reports of a woods fire in a remote, heavily forested area.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered a rapidly spreading brush fire covering a large portion of wooded terrain. Crews began immediate suppression efforts while working to navigate difficult access points due to the challenging landscape.
During initial fire suppression operations, responders discovered a deceased individual within the burn area. Authorities quickly shifted focus to secure the scene and preserve evidence, initiating a coordinated death investigation.
Officials say no foul play is suspected at this time.
Multiple agencies responded to assist with both the fire and death investigations, including the Gordon County Fire Rescue Fire Investigators, Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, Gordon County Coroner’s Office, Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Fire crews continued controlled suppression efforts while investigators began examining the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire, as well as the circumstances surrounding the death.
The identity of the individual has not been released pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Officials are reminding residents to use extreme caution with outdoor burning, especially during dry conditions, and to report any uncontrolled fires by calling 911.
The incident remains under active investigation, and additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
