CALHOUN, GA — The Calhoun City Schools Board of Education’s October 27 meeting was marked by recognition, remembrance, and reflection on leadership that continues to shape the district’s legacy of excellence.

The evening began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by the Camo Crocodiles and Brown Bears from Calhoun Early Learning Academy, followed by an invocation from kindergarten student Greer Lamb, granddaughter of Coach Lamb.

During the organizational portion of the meeting, the Board elected Becky Gilbert George as Chair, Andy Baxter as Vice Chair, and Rhoda Washington as Secretary.

Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor announced that the Calhoun City Schools Board has once again earned Exemplary Board status from the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA)—the highest distinction awarded for governance, leadership, and accountability. This recognition continues a long-standing tradition of excellence for the Calhoun Board.

Dr. Taylor credited the board’s success in part to the enduring leadership of the late Eddie Reeves, who served as Board Chair for a decade.

“While we are honored as a governance team to receive this recognition, there will be a huge void without our leader and friend, Eddie Reeves,” said Dr. Taylor. “We know Eddie will be looking down and cheering us on as we continue to lead with excellence.”

A highlight of the evening was a special presentation from State Senator Chuck Payne and Keith King of the Gordon County Board of Commissioners, who presented a resolution from the Georgia State Senate honoring Mr. Reeves’ years of dedicated service to the Calhoun City Schools system and the greater Calhoun-Gordon County community.

Board members, family, and guests also took time to share heartfelt tributes, celebrating Reeves’ commitment to education, leadership, and community service. Proceeds for the Eddie Reeves Memorial Scholarship—which will annually honor two Calhoun High School seniors, one in the arts and one in athletics—continue to grow through overwhelming community support.

In a unanimous vote under new business, the Board approved naming its meeting space the “Eddie Reeves Boardroom.” Plans are underway to install commemorative signage in the Board of Education lobby to honor his lasting contributions.

The gathering concluded with fellowship and a spread of Reeves’ favorite treats—Chick-fil-A nuggets, sweet tea, peanut M&Ms, Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes, El Pueblito chips and salsa, and hot cider—symbolizing the warmth and joy he brought to every occasion.

A moving musical tribute titled “You Beat Us Home,” written by Trace Vaughn and accompanied by a slideshow of photos from Reeves’ years of service, closed the evening.

“Eddie’s impact continues to shine across our community and in our hearts,” said Dr. Taylor. “His leadership and love for Calhoun City Schools will forever be part of our tradition of excellence.”
