Calhoun High School hosted the Lutzie 43 Foundation on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, for a full-day Safe Driving Summit aimed at promoting responsible decision-making behind the wheel. The event encouraged students to consider how their choices affect both their own lives and the lives of those around them.
The summit began with welcoming remarks from Superintendent Dr. Michele Taylor, along with Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle and other local emergency responders.
Students then heard a powerful presentation from Lutzie 43 Foundation Executive Director Mike Lutzenkirchen, who shared the story of his son, Philip—the former Lassiter High School and Auburn University athlete whose life and character left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Philip was known for his kindness, generosity, and commitment to helping others. His life was tragically cut short in a distracted-driving crash in 2014, a loss that led to the creation of the Lutzie 43 Foundation.
Lutzenkirchen emphasized the importance of making safe, deliberate choices on the road and highlighted the foundation’s nationally recognized 43 Key Seconds Safe Driving Initiative. He encouraged students to take 43 seconds before every drive to pause, prepare, and commit to safe habits—an approach designed to save lives and honor Philip’s legacy.
