Calhoun police arrested a Tennessee fugitive Tuesday night following a brief vehicle pursuit that ended with a crash and the suspect taken into custody without injury.
According to the Calhoun Police Department, Larry Nichols was wanted by authorities in Cleveland, Tennessee, on a charge of criminal attempt to commit murder. Investigators determined Nichols was hiding within the city limits of Calhoun and began surveillance at a residence.
After a short time, Nichols left the location in a vehicle. Patrol officers attempted a traffic stop, but Nichols fled, prompting a pursuit. The chase continued east on State Route 156, also known as Red Bud Road.
The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office was called in to assist. Deputies reported the suspect was driving a truck at speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour and traveling recklessly into oncoming traffic, creating what officials described as an extremely dangerous situation.
Just east of Red Bud Road, a deputy sheriff executed a PIT maneuver, forcing the vehicle off the roadway. The truck crashed down an embankment, and Nichols was apprehended without further resistance.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
“I want to commend our officers for their professionalism and thank the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance,” Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle said in a statement.
Authorities said the criminal investigation is being led by Calhoun Police in coordination with Tennessee law enforcement.
