Calhoun, GA – The Calhoun Police Department is partnering with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and law enforcement agencies from four neighboring states for the fourth annual Operation Southern Slow Down, a week-long crackdown on speeding drivers.

Beginning Monday, July 14, 2025, law enforcement officers across Georgia—alongside counterparts in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and South Carolina—will increase patrols on interstates, highways, and local roads to target drivers exceeding posted speed limits.

“Our main focus this week is reducing crashes and providing a safer transportation experience for motorists traveling in our city and throughout Georgia,” said Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle.

The multi-state initiative follows five consecutive years of coordinated speed enforcement that has gained national recognition. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows a decline in traffic fatalities during the campaign period, especially during the last two weeks of July, when the effort is traditionally held.

Lieutenant Christy Nicholson added a clear warning for motorists: “If you are pulled over next week, don’t ask for a warning—because this is it. The speed limit on every road in this city and state is set to protect everyone who is traveling on them.”

While each state will manage its own operations, coordinated efforts across the Southeast aim to make a bigger impact by targeting speeders simultaneously across state lines.
