The February meeting of the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education opened on a celebratory note as Ms. Ashley Storm’s Kindergarten “Lavender Llamas” helped lead the evening’s program. The students recited the Pledge of Allegiance, Millie Steely delivered the invocation, and the class shared their “good things,” bringing enthusiasm and energy to the start of the meeting.
The Board also officially welcomed its newest member, Dr. Sarah Layson, who was sworn in during the session. Leadership roles for the upcoming term were selected, with Becky Gilbert-George elected as Board Chair, Andy Baxter as Vice Chair, and Rhoda Washington as Secretary.
Student achievement was highlighted with recognition of Calhoun High School’s 2026 PAGE STAR Student, Isaac Tibbs, and his STAR Teacher, Kelli DeGuire, honoring their commitment to academic excellence.
The Board also celebrated the top three finishers in the District Spelling Bee: Dax Murphy, 8th grade; Lydia Whitlock, 6th grade; and Eliam Marroquin, 6th grade.
In addition, several staff members were recognized for earning advanced degrees this year, including Lily Adams, Abigail Ayers, Stephen Gaylor, Alexandria Green, Allison Kirby, Cassey LeBoeuf, Haley Miller, Heather Morris, Reba Moss, Cassie Richardson, Annabelle Roper, and Dr. Chris Stephens. Board members noted that their dedication to continued professional growth strengthens the district and supports student success.
