UPDATE (7:50 p.m.): Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle confirmed that the driver of the Ford Escape, who was transported by LifeForce following Thursday afternoon’s crash on South Wall Street, has died from their injuries.
ORIGINAL STORY: Two people were seriously injured in a Thursday afternoon collision on South Wall Street, according to preliminary information released by the Calhoun Police Department.
Police said a Kia Optima was traveling westbound on Highway 53 and turning right to head north on South Wall Street. As the Kia approached the intersection of Erwin Street, a Ford Escape attempted to turn left from Erwin Street to travel south on South Wall Street.
Authorities say the Ford Escape entered the intersection without obeying a stop sign, crossing into the path of the Kia Optima and causing the crash.
The driver of the Kia Optima reported chest pains but was not transported from the scene.
The driver of the Ford Escape was airlifted by LifeForce to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A passenger in the Ford Escape was transported by ambulance to Floyd Medical Center.
The incident remains under investigation.
