Repair crews in Floyd County are continuing efforts to secure the historic Rome Courthouse after a major fire caused significant damage to the building in March.

Officials say crews are actively removing loose bricks and reinforcing the courthouse tower as part of ongoing efforts to secure the building and prevent further deterioration. The work is focused on ensuring the structure is safe while long-term decisions about restoration move forward.

A Floyd County commissioner noted that plans had already been in motion to relocate several county operations out of the courthouse prior to the fire. However, the damage significantly accelerated that timeline.

In response, county commissioners have approved a $2.8 million contract to renovate the county’s law enforcement center. Once the upgrades are complete, the facility will house multiple services currently impacted by the courthouse damage, including the E-911 center, juvenile court, and the tax commissioner and tag offices.

County leaders say the transition will help maintain continuity of essential services while the future of the courthouse is evaluated.
