Gordon County and much of north central, northeast, and northwest Georgia will face the season’s coldest conditions early Monday, as the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST.
Forecasters report that overnight temperatures could fall to 28 degrees in parts of the warning area, with even lower readings possible in the higher elevations of northeast Georgia. The sub-freezing temperatures are expected to produce widespread frost and pose risks to vegetation and outdoor infrastructure.
According to the alert, frost and freeze conditions may kill crops and other sensitive plants. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also be damaged. Motorists should be aware that low visibility in some areas may create hazardous driving conditions during the early morning hours.
Residents are urged to take immediate precautions. The National Weather Service recommends protecting tender plants from the cold, wrapping or draining exposed pipes, or allowing them to drip slowly to prevent freezing.
The Freeze Warning remains in effect until late Monday morning.
