The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office announced this week that every member of its Enforcement and Jail divisions has successfully completed annual CPR and First Aid training. The training, led by staff instructors, included instruction on the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and ensures that deputies and jail personnel are prepared to respond quickly in emergencies. Sheriff Mitch Ralston emphasized that the annual requirement equips officers with essential lifesaving skills that benefit both the public and those in their custody. Local organizations are also encouraged to take advantage of the training opportunities offered by the Sheriff’s Office.

Meanwhile, Calhoun’s historic GEM Theatre will celebrate the 14th anniversary of its grand re-opening with a community block party on Saturday. Festivities begin at 4 p.m. with a classic car show in the Library parking lot, food trucks in the Community Development Department lot, and an open house inside the theatre. The celebration will conclude with a 7 p.m. screening of Grease Sing-Along, inviting guests to enjoy the beloved musical together. Organizers say the event is both a milestone celebration and a thank-you to the community for its continued support of the landmark venue.

As the holiday weekend approaches, the Georgia Department of Transportation is preparing for increased travel by suspending all interstate lane closures from noon Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday. The move is intended to ease congestion and improve safety for Labor Day travelers. Heavy traffic is expected along I-75, I-16, and around Macon, with somewhat lighter congestion projected near the Alabama and South Carolina borders. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, stay alert, and use the free 511GA app or dial 5-1-1 for real-time updates. HERO and CHAMP units will be stationed statewide to assist drivers.

We’ll be closed Saturday, August 30 – Monday, September 1 for the Labor Day holiday. We’ll re-open on Tuesday, September 2 at 10 a.m. We wish everyone a Happy Labor Day
