Georgia gas prices are continuing to climb as ongoing conflict in the Middle East puts additional pressure on global oil markets.
According to AAA – The Auto Club Group, Georgia’s average price for regular gasoline has risen to $3.81 per gallon. That is two cents higher than a week ago, although prices remain two cents lower than a month ago.
The biggest difference is compared with this time last year. Georgia drivers are now paying 92 cents more per gallon than they were a year ago, when the statewide average stood at $2.89.
At the current average, filling a standard 15-gallon tank with regular gasoline costs approximately $57.15.
“As uncertainty in global energy markets continues, drivers can expect fuel prices to remain sensitive to developments overseas,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “To help offset higher fuel costs, drivers can save money by combining errands into one trip, avoiding aggressive driving, and using the AAA Mobile App to find the lowest gas prices in their area.”
Drivers in Northwest Georgia continue to see some of the lowest prices in the state. The Catoosa-Dade-Walker metro market has an average of $3.71 per gallon, making it the second-lowest metro average in Georgia.
Augusta-Aiken has the lowest metro average at $3.69, followed by Catoosa-Dade-Walker at $3.71 and Albany at $3.72.
Georgia’s most expensive metro markets are Savannah at $3.88, Hinesville-Fort Stewart at $3.87 and Macon at $3.86. Atlanta’s average stands at $3.83 per gallon.
Prices are also rising nationally. The U.S. average increased three cents over the past week to $4.09 per gallon. AAA says elevated crude oil prices above $80 per barrel and continued uncertainty near the Strait of Hormuz are keeping upward pressure on prices despite softer seasonal demand.
If current conditions continue, August is on track to become the most expensive August on record for U.S. drivers.
The current national average of $4.09 is up from $4.06 a week ago and $3.14 one year ago. The record national average remains $5.01 per gallon, set in June 2022.
Georgia’s record high is $4.49 per gallon, also set in June 2022.
AAA notes that gas prices are subject to change overnight as oil markets and other factors continue to affect the price drivers pay at the pump.
