Georgia Unemployment Drops Across All Regions in April

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that unemployment rates fell in every regional commission area of the state during the month of April—a strong sign for Georgia’s growing economy.

Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes praised the progress, saying:

“When we connect Georgians with meaningful work, we’re putting food on tables, creating stability for individuals and families, and building an economy where our children can see their future—right here at home.”

In Northwest Georgia, the unemployment rate declined six-tenths of a percent to 2.9%, matching the level reported a year ago.

Here’s a look at local county unemployment rates for April:

  • Dade County: 2.7%
  • Catoosa County: 2.7%
  • Walker County: 2.8%
  • Gordon County: 2.8%
  • Chattooga County: 3.4%
  • Whitfield County: 3.2%
  • Floyd County: 3.2%

While the regional labor force dipped slightly—down about 2,100 people—the number of employed individuals in Northwest Georgia rose by 540 in April.

Initial claims for unemployment rose slightly compared to March but were still down more than 600 compared to this time last year.

The Department of Labor says the numbers reflect continued efforts to grow a stable, job-rich economy throughout Georgia.
