CALHOUN, GA – With another wave of extreme heat sweeping across much of the United States this week, Gordon County officials are taking action to help residents and visitors stay safe.

Gordon County Emergency Management has partnered with local municipalities to open multiple cooling stations across the county. These designated locations will provide air-conditioned spaces where individuals can escape the heat, sit down, and cool off.

“Working with our local communities allows us to provide these vital resources in multiple areas of the county,” said Gordon County Emergency Management officials. “This partnership helps ensure that no one is left without a safe place during periods of dangerously high temperatures.”

The following facilities will be available as cooling stations during the week:

  • Gordon County Parks and Recreation Department (Sonoraville)
    7494 Fairmount Highway SE, Calhoun
    Monday–Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
    Saturday: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • Voluntary Action Center
    343 South Wall Street, Calhoun
    Monday–Friday: 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • Fairmount City Hall
    2661 Highway 411 SE, Fairmount
    Monday–Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

  • Plainville City Hall and Library
    110 Earl Street SW, Plainville
    Monday–Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Resaca Town Hall and Gym
    330 Walker Street NW, Resaca
    Monday–Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
    Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

In addition to these indoor options, residents can cool off at the Gordon County Parks and Recreation Splash Pad, located at the Sonoraville recreation department. It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and is free of charge.

Swimmers can also visit the Calhoun Recreation Department Pool at 601 South River Street, open Monday through Saturday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $3.00 for ages 13 and up, and $2.00 for children under 13 (who must be accompanied by an adult).

Officials emphasize that while the cooling stations provide a comfortable indoor setting, food and beverages are not available on-site, and all visitors must follow the posted hours of operation.
