The latest class of Gordon County Fire & Rescue (GCFR) recruits is hard at work completing an intensive, multi-week training program designed to prepare them for the field.
Earlier this week, recruits participated in a hands-on vehicle extrication drill at Parrish Wrecker Service. Georgia 101.7’s Brent Jones and The Gordon Gazette’s Brandi O. were on site as GCFR Assistant Chief Sorrels demonstrated the department’s rescue equipment, discussed various emergency scenarios, and guided trainees through the proper use of the tools.
Following the demonstrations, each recruit had the opportunity to perform extrications on actual vehicles — putting their training into practice under the supervision of experienced firefighters.
Chief Derryberry highlighted how far the department’s tools and techniques have evolved over the years. “What once required an entire truck to transport is now compact and battery-powered,” he explained. “Every engine in our fleet now carries these advanced tools, allowing our crews to respond faster and more efficiently.”
Just a day prior, the same recruits participated in live fire training at GCFR Station Five. Under the guidance of the command team, the recruits joined seasoned firefighters in fighting real fires, entering structures, and performing rescue operations — all designed to simulate the conditions they’ll face on duty.
These new firefighters are expected to complete their training and officially join shifts in mid-November, marking the start of their service to Gordon County and its residents.
