Gordon County’s unemployment rate ticked up slightly in June, rising to 3.3%, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor. That’s a modest increase from 3.0% in May, but still lower than the 3.5% rate recorded in June 2023.

The increase in Gordon County reflects a broader statewide trend. The Department of Labor reported that all 12 of Georgia’s regional commissions saw slight increases in unemployment last month—an expected seasonal pattern.

Labor officials attribute the uptick to the annual influx of students entering the workforce during the summer break, which tends to cause temporary hiring shifts and short-term increases in unemployment.

Floyd County also saw a similar trend, with unemployment rising from 3.4% in May to 3.7% in June. However, that figure is still an improvement over 4.0% this time last year.

Bartow County’s unemployment rate rose to 3.4% in June, up from 3.1% in May, but down slightly from 3.6% in June 2023.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes described the trend as typical for early summer, emphasizing that these shifts are temporary and tied to seasonal workforce changes. She also highlighted the state’s strong employment outlook, noting Georgia’s recent milestone of 5 million jobs statewide.
