Cadets from Gordon County Schools JROTC recently joined fellow students from across northwest Georgia for a leadership and career exploration visit to Fort Benning, one of the U.S. Army’s premier military training installations.

The joint trip included participation from Ridgeland High School JROTC and LaFayette High School JROTC, bringing together cadets from multiple North Georgia programs to observe military training, tour facilities and interact with active-duty soldiers.

During the visit, cadets observed a rappel demonstration at the Air Assault School and received instruction on harness systems at the Airborne School. Students also spoke with Army Drill Instructors about the physical demands and expectations of Basic Combat Training, gaining firsthand insight into the discipline, fitness and commitment required for military service.

The trip concluded with a tour of the National Infantry Museum, where cadets explored the history and legacy of the United States Army Infantry.

“This joint visit allowed our cadets to not only learn from the Army, but also from each other,” said Wallace Steinbrecher, Senior Army Instructor for Gordon County JROTC. “By bringing multiple programs together, we strengthened teamwork, shared perspectives, and reinforced the leadership principles we teach every day.”

Throughout the visit, cadets observed live demonstrations and participated in discussions centered on decision-making, accountability and leadership development. Organizers said the experience served as a real-world extension of classroom instruction by allowing students to see leadership principles applied in active military environments.

“Experiences like this give cadets a clearer understanding of what it means to serve and lead,” said Mike Mansi, Senior Army Instructor at LaFayette High School. “They leave with a stronger sense of purpose and a better appreciation for the discipline required to succeed.”

Officials said the opportunity to engage directly with soldiers and military leaders also helped cadets explore both military and civilian career opportunities while building confidence in their own leadership abilities.

The collaborative visit reflects the ongoing commitment of North Georgia JROTC programs to develop leadership skills, responsible citizenship and character through hands-on educational experiences.
