Gordon County Opens Cooling Stations Amid Extreme Heat Advisory

Calhoun, GA – June 24, 2025 — As a sweltering heat wave continues to grip much of the United States, Gordon County has joined other communities in responding to the rising temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the area, in effect from 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, through 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, with potential for additional advisories later in the week.

In response, Gordon County Emergency Management has partnered with local governments to provide public cooling stations for residents and visitors seeking relief from the heat. These designated locations will offer air-conditioned spaces where individuals can rest and cool off during the hottest parts of the day.

Cooling Station Locations and Hours:

  • Gordon County Parks and Recreation Department (Sonoraville)
    7494 Fairmount Highway SE, Calhoun
    Monday – Friday: 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
    Saturday: 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

  • Voluntary Action Center
    343 South Wall Street, Calhoun
    Monday – Friday: 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

  • Fairmount City Hall
    2661 Highway 411 SE, Fairmount
    Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

  • Plainville City Hall and Library
    110 Earl Street SW, Plainville
    Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

  • Resaca Town Hall and Gym
    330 Walker Street NW, Resaca
    Monday – Thursday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
    Friday: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Additionally, the Gordon County Parks and Recreation Splash Pad, located at the Sonoraville recreation facility, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is free to the public. The community pool at the Calhoun Recreation Department (601 South River Street) is also open Monday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $3 for those aged 13 and older, and $2 for children under 13, who must be accompanied by an adult.

While these cooling stations provide a space to escape the heat, residents are reminded that food and beverages will not be provided, and the posted hours must be followed.
