Gordon County Eyes Future Opioid Settlements, Tax Options, and Infrastructure Upgrades
Calhoun, GA — July 24, 2025
Gordon County officials are keeping a close watch on two pending opioid-related settlements with Purdue Pharma/Sackler and pharmaceutical company Sandoz, though exact dollar amounts from these cases remain unknown. As of June 30, the county’s dedicated opioid settlement fund stands at $243,032. These funds are currently allocated to support counseling and treatment services through the Gordon County Drug Court program.
New Tax Option Could Ease Property Tax Burden
In a recent webinar hosted by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), local leaders received guidance on the newly authorized Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST), created under House Bill 581. The optional 1% sales tax—if approved by voters—would be aimed at reducing property tax rates for residents.
Gordon County residents currently pay a 7% total sales tax: 4% to the state and 1% each to LOST (Local Option Sales Tax), SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax), and ESPLOST (Education SPLOST). The FLOST would serve as an additional local tax, similar in structure to the TSPLOST (Transportation SPLOST), and must be approved by referendum. It also requires a joint agreement between the county and its municipalities.
Should voters pass the referendum in November 2025, collections could begin as early as January 2026, with potential reductions to the county’s millage rate by 2027. A delayed approval in May 2026 would push implementation to September 2026.
Industrial Growth Gaining Momentum
Economic development continues to accelerate, particularly along the Highway 41 South corridor and in the Trimble Hollow area. The Gordon County Development Authority reports that multiple projects are exploring development opportunities, including reuse of the Thor Building. A new industrial prospect has also expressed interest in property along McDaniel Station Road.
Broadband Expansion Nears Completion
Comcast will celebrate the Gordon County Broadband Expansion and Lift Zone Launch on Tuesday, July 29 at noon, hosted at the Boys & Girls Club. The Lift Zone initiative is designed to provide students and families with free high-speed internet access, addressing gaps in digital connectivity.
County leaders reviewed the ongoing progress of the broadband expansion during the most recent Public Facilities Authority meeting. A final report is anticipated soon, detailing the full investment, fiber mileage installed, and how many homes and businesses now have access to reliable broadband service.
Road Repairs and Storm Recovery
Recent severe weather caused localized flash flooding throughout the county. One of the most impacted areas was Love Bridge Road, where a culvert washout forced a temporary closure. Public Works crews completed emergency repairs and have since reopened the roadway.
Meanwhile, Johnson Lake Road near the Buc-ee’s location saw Phase 1 of road repairs completed this past Sunday night. Phase 2 is expected to begin overnight on Thursday or Friday of this week to minimize traffic disruptions.
$400K GDOT Safety Grant Awarded
Gordon County will receive approximately $400,000 from the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Safety Action Program. The grant, which comes with a required 30% local match, will support safety upgrades such as anti-skid paving, guardrail repairs, and enhanced striping at critical intersections. The county plans to draw the match from existing transportation-related budget allocations.
County officials say these ongoing projects reflect a broader commitment to improving infrastructure, promoting economic growth, and prioritizing public health and safety.
