Calhoun, GA — The Gordon County Schools Nutrition Department has earned top honors from the Georgia Department of Education, receiving the 2024 Turnip the Beet Gold Award for excellence in its summer feeding program. The district is one of just nine in the entire state to receive this elite recognition.
The Turnip the Beet Award celebrates programs that go above and beyond in offering high-quality, nutritious meals to children during the summer months. Gordon County’s program stood out for its consistent dedication to feeding students healthy meals—even during the hottest days and earliest mornings of summer.
“This award reflects the extraordinary effort, heart, and commitment of our entire nutrition team,” said Nicole Head, Director of School Nutrition. “We are proud to serve our community and ensure children have access to the food they need to thrive.”
Throughout the summer, the district’s feeding program has provided hundreds of thousands of meals to students and families across Gordon County. Leaders say the success wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the summer nutrition staff, who show up day after day with one goal: to ensure no child goes hungry.
Superintendent leadership praised the department’s efforts and extended thanks to Nicole Head for her strong leadership and unwavering focus on student wellness.
The Turnip the Beet Gold Award underscores Gordon County’s continued commitment to student health and well-being—even outside the classroom.
