GORDON COUNTY — At the recent Gordon County Board of Commissioners (GCBC) Public Works and Facilities meeting, officials provided updates on several key infrastructure and facility projects.

Pocket Road is on track to reopen in both directions near the end of October, according to county officials. Construction on Mount Olive Church Road is set to begin in approximately two weeks, with dam reconstruction as the first major task, said Administrator Jim Ledbetter.

Plans for a new county morgue are in the final planning stages, while proposals for upgrading the LED lighting at Sonoraville Recreation Center have been submitted. The initial phase, which includes lighting the baseball fields and tennis courts, is projected to cost roughly $790,000. Lighting upgrades for other areas, including the football fields, are expected to be completed in a later phase. The new LED fixtures are designed to reduce energy costs and offer longer-lasting bulbs at lower replacement costs compared to the current halogen lighting.

In other infrastructure news, work on McDaniel Station Road will begin with the relocation of gas lines as a first step in upcoming construction projects.

Fleet Management also announced openings for a supervisor and a mechanic. Early discussions on potential changes to fleet policy are underway, which could include options for leasing vehicles in the future, according to Ledbetter.

Residents can expect these projects to bring improved safety, efficiency, and cost savings across Gordon County’s infrastructure and facilities.
