Hamilton Medical Center Shares Tips to Help Prevent the Flu

As flu season gets underway, Hamilton Medical Center is encouraging residents to take simple, effective steps to protect themselves, their families and the community from influenza.

Health officials emphasize that prevention remains the best defense against the flu. One of the most important measures is receiving a seasonal flu vaccine. The annual flu shot helps reduce the risk of infection and can lessen the severity of illness if someone does become sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older.

Frequent handwashing is also key to preventing the spread of germs. Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds helps remove viruses that cause the flu. When soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used as an alternative.

Covering coughs and sneezes is another effective prevention method. Health officials recommend using an elbow or tissue to cover the mouth and nose. Used tissues should be thrown away immediately, followed by handwashing.

Residents who experience flu-like symptoms — including fever, cough, sore throat or fatigue — are advised to stay home to prevent spreading the virus to others. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, such as door handles, light switches and mobile devices, can also help reduce the spread of illness.

Maintaining healthy daily habits, including getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, staying physically active and managing stress, supports a strong immune system during flu season.

Flu vaccines are available at Hamilton Primary Care locations by appointment and at Hamilton Walk-In Clinics.
