As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is suspending all interstate lane closures in an effort to ease travel congestion and improve safety during the busy holiday period.
The suspension will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, and continue through 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2. However, drivers should be aware that some closures may remain in place for safety or emergency reasons.

Real-Time Resources: 511GA App
Georgia DOT urges travelers to utilize the 511GA app, a free tool offering real-time traffic and weather updates, turn-by-turn navigation, roadside assistance requests, and access to live traffic cameras. The app is available via the Apple Store and Google Play. Users can also call 5-1-1 or visit 511ga.org.
Roadside Assistance: HERO & CHAMP Units
Two free roadside assistance programs will be operating throughout the state:
HERO Units: Patrolling metro Atlanta, HERO operators assist with crash response, traffic clearance, and minor vehicle issues such as flat tires and battery jumps.
CHAMP Units: Covering areas outside metro Atlanta (excluding I-24 and I-59), CHAMP operators provide similar services, maintain traffic flow, and report highway maintenance needs.
Travel Safety Reminders
Georgia DOT reminds motorists of essential safety practices for the holiday weekend:
Move Over Law: Drivers must move over for emergency vehicles or slow down when a lane change is unsafe.
Stay Sober: Designate a sober driver or arrange for alternate transportation if drinking.
Remain in Your Vehicle: If stranded, wait inside your car for assistance.
Drive Defensively: Watch for out-of-town drivers, maintain safe distances, and avoid distractions.
Prepare for Summer Heat: Check your vehicle’s condition, drive during cooler hours, and carry an emergency kit.
