A long-vacant building along South Wall Street in Calhoun is set to see new life as renovation work gets underway for a locally owned café.
According to City of Calhoun Building Official Joey Moore, a building permit was issued last week to J.T. Williams Construction for the renovation of the former Bruster’s Ice Cream location at 710 South Wall Street. The project will transform the space into a new eating establishment called La Brulee Café.
The existing building, which measures approximately 1,510 square feet, is being redesigned to include a small indoor dining area. Plans call for three four-seat tables and three two-seat tables, offering a modest dine-in option for customers. Moore also confirmed that the drive-thru will remain in use as part of the new business.
At this time, there has been no announcement regarding the type of food or menu La Brulee Café will offer, as the restaurant is not affiliated with any national franchise.
Renovations were already underway as of Thursday, with visible changes to the exterior including the removal of the building’s red awning and previous signage.
The property has sat unused for years following the closure of Bruster’s of Calhoun Inc., which was originally registered with the Georgia Corporations Division in 2002. State records indicate the business was officially dissolved in 2015, though it had reportedly been closed for at least a decade prior to the current redevelopment effort.
