When electric cooperatives are impacted by severe weather, they rely on a long-standing mutual-aid network that brings in crews from across the region to help restore power as quickly and safely as possible. North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (NGEMC) has both contributed to and benefitted from this cooperative effort over the years.
Following Winter Storm Fern, NGEMC officials determined that the service area had largely avoided the worst effects of the storm. As a result, three NGEMC crews were able to deploy to assist other cooperatives that experienced more significant damage.
One NGEMC crew first provided assistance to neighboring Amicalola EMC on Sunday before continuing on to Habersham EMC in northeast Georgia on Monday, Jan. 26. Two additional NGEMC crews traveled north to assist Meriwether Lewis Electric Cooperative in Tennessee.
NGEMC officials emphasized the importance of mutual aid during major weather events, noting that these partnerships help ensure faster recovery for communities across the region. The cooperative asks the public to keep those impacted by the storm, as well as the crews working long hours to restore power, in their thoughts as recovery efforts continue.
