NWS Issues Nighttime Severe Weather Safety Reminder for North and Central Georgia

The National Weather Service is urging residents across North and Central Georgia to remain alert as a strong cold front moves through the region tonight into Thursday morning.

Forecasters say the system will bring another line of showers and thunderstorms that will move eastward across the area overnight. Some storms could become strong to severe, with the potential to produce damaging wind gusts, hail, and brief spin-up tornadoes embedded within the line of storms. The tornado threat is expected to be greatest in parts of western Georgia.

Because the storms are expected to move through during the overnight hours, officials are reminding residents to take extra precautions before going to bed.

The National Weather Service recommends making sure phones are fully charged and that alert notifications are not silenced. Residents should unmute their phones, turn off “Do Not Disturb” settings, and ensure they are able to receive emergency weather alerts during the night.

Officials also advise keeping a flashlight nearby in case warnings are issued while people are asleep and preparing a safe space in advance in the event severe weather develops.

Weather officials stress that nighttime storms can be especially dangerous because people may not hear warnings while sleeping, making preparation ahead of time critical. Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and monitor local forecasts as the storm system moves through the region.
