A multi-agency search continues at Carter’s Lake as authorities work to locate a man who has been missing since Tuesday night.
According to the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Sean Michael Cunningham was last seen on Carter’s Lake in a green Old Town canoe near the Woodring Campground area. Cunningham is described as a white male with blue eyes, a shaved head, and a full beard. He is approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds.
Investigators say Cunningham was reported missing during a storm that moved through the area Tuesday night. His last known communication came at 11:26 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, when he called from beneath a dock near Woodring Campground, where he had taken shelter from the storm. Authorities said his phone battery died shortly afterward.
Search crews have continued searching the area around Woodring Campground. Officials said Cunningham had been canoeing on the lake before he disappeared. His backpack was later recovered by kayakers, and his truck has also been located.
