Community Gathers at Historic Cemetery; Local Governments Advance Major Development Projects

June 12, 2025 – Gordon County, GA — The Colbert Cemetery, recently designated as a historic site, welcomed community members Saturday for a special event honoring its sacred past while highlighting plans for its future. Organizers encouraged public support and donations through the Gordon County Community Coalition; contributions can be made at www.gccccc.org.

In other local developments, the Calhoun City School Board will hold a public budget hearing Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. at The Depot. The Calhoun City Council is also scheduled to meet, with a key focus on a significant expansion to the city’s recreation facilities.

A new 58,000-square-foot recreation complex is in the works, including a gymnasium, community center, and an indoor walking track. The facility, slated to break ground this fall, will be named in honor of longtime Recreation Department Director Billy Bearden.

Meanwhile, Gordon County is moving forward with a new 1,100-square-foot community facility in the Ranger area. The upcoming structure, designed without a full kitchen, will include a serving area and microwave oven. Additional parking is also part of the plan. Construction will begin after demolition of the existing 4,000-square-foot building on the site.

These projects reflect ongoing efforts across Gordon County and Calhoun to invest in community infrastructure, public health, and heritage preservation.
