Calhoun Fire Responds to Industrial Fire; Community Efforts and Voting Updates Also in the Spotlight
Calhoun, GA – It was a busy evening for first responders and community members alike on Tuesday.
The City of Calhoun Fire Department was dispatched around 7 p.m. to an industrial fire in the 1400 block of Hwy 41 South. According to reports, employees inside the facility first smelled smoke before one worker—who was outside filling a hyster tank—noticed smoke rising from the rooftop. 911 was quickly called, and firefighters arrived on the scene, working efficiently to extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Gordon Central High School Warriors Football Team spent the evening volunteering at the VAC (Voluntary Action Center). The student-athletes packed food boxes and took time to learn about the vital services the agency provides to local residents. Their efforts highlight the growing spirit of service among young leaders in the community.
In statewide news, Georgia is participating in “Operation Southern Slowdown,” a regional traffic enforcement initiative targeting speeders and reckless drivers. The multi-state operation includes Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, and now Georgia. Drivers can expect increased law enforcement presence on highways this week.
Finally, a reminder to local voters: early voting continues today and tomorrow for the Democratic Party’s Public Service Commission (PSC) Primary Runoff. Early voting is being held at the Gordon County Courthouse from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The official runoff election will be held on Tuesday, July 15, at the Calhoun Recreation Department, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
