GCBE Schedules Millage Rate Hearings; Free Meals for All Students This School Year; Operation Southern Slowdown Underway
CALHOUN, GA — The Gordon County Board of Education (GCBE) has scheduled two public hearings to discuss the proposed millage rate for the upcoming fiscal year. Both hearings will take place on Wednesday, July 30, at the GCBE Central Office complex next to Sonoraville High School. The first session begins at 7:30 a.m., and the second follows at 12:00 noon. Community members are encouraged to attend and share input.
In a separate announcement, both Gordon County and Calhoun City Schools will provide free breakfast and lunch to all students during the new school year. The federally funded program, made possible through a Biden-era grant, eliminates the need for paperwork or qualification. The same grant has been used in recent years to support the area’s Summer Feeding Program.
Meanwhile, Operation Southern Slowdown is currently in effect across Georgia and neighboring states. The multi-agency enforcement campaign targets speeders and reckless drivers along major highways. Local law enforcement agencies are participating to help reduce accidents and fatalities during the busy summer travel season.
