Two Men Arrested in Rome, GA for Possession and Manufacturing of Explosive Devices

ROME, GA — State and federal authorities have arrested two Rome men following the discovery of multiple homemade explosive devices in a local commercial facility and private residence, according to Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King.

On the morning of July 15, the Rome Police Department executed an unrelated search warrant at a commercial property located on Hull Avenue. During the operation, officers uncovered numerous homemade explosive devices, prompting assistance from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Floyd County Police Department, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Authorities arrested Daryl Stamey Sr., 56, at the scene. He is now facing 23 counts of possession of an explosive device.

A day later, on July 16, investigators followed up on a lead that led them to the residence of Steven Gray, 64, where the devices were reportedly being manufactured. A second search warrant was executed, and additional explosive devices and materials used in making explosives were found, disarmed, and safely removed from the property. Gray was taken into custody and charged with 23 counts of manufacturing explosive devices.

Commissioner King praised the teamwork involved in the arrests:

“This case is a clear example of how local, state, and federal agencies can work together to quickly and effectively respond to dangerous situations,” said King.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted jointly by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Rome Police, Floyd County Police, and the ATF.

No injuries have been reported. Authorities have not yet released a motive behind the devices or any details regarding potential targets.
