CALHOUN, GA — With SNAP benefits (commonly known as food stamps) set to pause in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) is preparing for a surge in local food assistance needs.

“I had over 20 brand-new families sign up for the food pantry today — families who have never used our services before,” said VAC Director Miranda Bentley on Friday, October 24, 2025.

The USDA recently announced that SNAP benefits would be unavailable in November if the shutdown continues. In response, VAC is stepping in to support those affected.

“We are currently in need of canned goods, cereal, cereal bars, and pasta,” Bentley said. “We don’t yet know how the situation will unfold in November, but our staff and Board are developing a plan to ensure our community’s needs are met.”
